A Bullhead City, AZ business can look for equipment financing in four places: the dealer selling the machine, a bank, an independent equipment finance company, and a request service such as Wheatland Finance, which passes one request to funding partners. Each prices the same machine differently, so the comparison is in total dollars, not the headline rate.
A Wheatland Finance article comparing dealer, bank and independent equipment financing, with an invented two-quote comparison.
Dealer programs for construction and kitchen equipment
Many construction equipment makers run their own finance arms, and restaurant equipment dealers often work with a finance company they refer buyers to. The appeal is convenience: the paperwork happens at the counter. The catch is that a low promotional rate can come with a higher price, or with the loss of a cash discount the dealer would otherwise give.
Both groups of buyers are sizable in the county. Mohave County, AZ counted 672 construction establishments with paid employees in 2023, and 155 full-service plus 147 limited-service restaurants, 302 in all (CBP, NAICS 23, 722511 and 722513; our arithmetic). A dealer program covers only the brand that dealer sells, so a kitchen that buys a range from one dealer and a walk-in cooler from another may face two sets of terms.
Banks versus equipment lenders
A bank lends against the whole business: deposits, history, credit and often a personal guarantee. An equipment finance company leans more on the machine as collateral, may take older or used units a bank passes on, and offers leases as well as loans. Neither is right for every purchase.
Both kinds of business are present locally. Mohave County, AZ had 33 commercial banking establishments with paid employees in 2023 (CBP, NAICS 522110), and 47 nondepository credit intermediation establishments, the Census category for non-bank credit businesses such as sales finance companies (CBP, NAICS 5222). Wheatland Finance is neither; it passes a request to funding partners, which make their own decisions.
A machine meant to stay for ten years may fit a bank term loan; a machine replaced every few years may fit a lease better. Small repeat purchases can go on a line of credit instead of a separate note each time.
Leases come in two common shapes. A fair market value lease ends with the option to buy at the going price, return the machine or renew; a $1 buyout lease works much like a loan, with ownership at the end. The payment on the first is lower, but its total only compares fairly with a loan once the buyout is added.
Used equipment from auctions and private sellers in Bullhead City, AZ
Auctions and private sales can save money, but the buyer carries more of the checking. A partner financing a used machine may want the serial number, hours, photos, an inspection report, a lien search and, for titled equipment, the title. It finances against what the machine is worth, which may be less than the price paid.
Illustration only, invented figures: a machine bought at auction for $38,000, plus a 10% buyer's premium of $3,800 and $1,450 to haul it to Bullhead City, AZ, costs $43,250 delivered. If an appraisal values it at $40,000 and a partner finances 85% of that, or $34,000, the buyer covers the other $9,250 from its own cash.
The buyer's premium and the hauling bill are part of the real cost, and neither raises the machine's value as collateral.
Comparing two equipment quotes
Illustration only, invented figures: an independent auto repair shop pricing an alignment machine gets two offers. The dealer quotes $41,800 at an annual rate of 3.9% over 48 months with a $350 documentation fee. The same dealer's cash price is $38,900, and an independent finance company offers 9.4% over 60 months with a $495 fee.
| Quote | Amount financed | Monthly payment | Total with fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dealer program | $41,800 | $941.94 | $45,563.12 |
| Cash price, independent finance | $38,900 | $815.07 | $49,399.20 |
The dealer program costs about $3,836 less in total, while the independent quote is about $126.87 lower each month, mainly because it runs a year longer. A shop short on monthly cash may still pick the lower payment; the table shows what that choice costs.
Price, rate and term are not the whole comparison. Check whether either offer charges a prepayment penalty, whether it requires a particular insurance policy on the machine, and whether the documentation fee is the only fee. A quote that leaves one of these out can look cheaper on paper than it turns out to be.
Small shops face this choice too: 75 of the 135 automotive repair and maintenance establishments that Mohave County, AZ counted in 2023 had fewer than five employees (CBP, NAICS 8111).
