A Bullhead City, AZ builder or finish contractor can split funding three ways: equipment financing for machines, working capital for crew payroll that runs ahead of a draw, and a line of credit for material bought job after job. Wheatland Finance sends the details to funding partners for their review and decision.
A Wheatland Finance article that prices a machine, a payroll gap and a materials line for a Mohave County, AZ contractor.
Skid steers, trailers and compact excavators
Equipment financing uses the machine as the collateral, so the request starts with the machine itself: make, model, hours or year, the seller and the price. A skid steer, a compact excavator and the trailer that moves them can sit in one request or in two, and each can carry its own term if the useful lives differ.
Illustration only, invented figures: a compact excavator at $74,500 with $7,450 down leaves $67,050 to finance; over 60 months at an annual rate of 9.25% the payment is about $1,400.00 a month. An equipment trailer at $11,800, financed in full over 48 months at the same rate, adds about $295.05, so the pair costs about $1,695.04 a month until the trailer is paid off.
That payment has to fit lean years as well as full ones. Mohave County, AZ authorized 2,241 new housing units in 2023 and 2,543 in 2024, then 1,817 in 2025, 726 fewer than the year before (Census Building Permits Survey; our arithmetic). A builder signing a five-year note is betting on work across every one of those swings, so a partner reads the backlog and the contracts, not only the quote.
Crew payroll before a draw pays
Crews are paid every two weeks; a builder or general contractor may release a draw only after a phase is inspected and invoiced. Illustration only, invented figures: a finish crew of five working 80 hours a pay period at $26.50 an hour costs $10,600 a payday. A 38-day wait for this draw includes 2 or 3 biweekly paydays, so $21,200 to $31,800 of crew wages must be covered before it arrives.
For scale, specialty trade contractors in Mohave County, AZ paid $167 million in annual payroll to 3,265 employees in 2023 (CBP, NAICS 238), about $51,153 per paid employee, or roughly $1,967 per two-week period (our arithmetic; the CBP employee count is a March snapshot).
A working capital loan sized to that gap is paid back from the draw it bridges. If draws arrive late on every job, the gap is permanent and a revolving line fits better than a series of one-off loans.
A credit line for materials across several jobs
A line of credit has a set limit; the contractor draws for one job, pays it down when that job pays, and draws again for the next. Interest runs only on the balance and only for the days it is out.
| Job | Draw | Days out | Interest |
|---|---|---|---|
| Movable kitchen equipment | $14,000 | 34 | $149.97 |
| Tile and flooring package | $9,500 | 27 | $80.82 |
| New-home interior trim | $12,200 | 45 | $172.97 |
The three draws cost $403.76 in interest in all. Even if all three jobs overlap, $35,700 is out at once, inside the $40,000 limit; any draw or annual fee the partner charges comes on top.
Keeping that line for the excavator would be the wrong fit. A machine paid off over five years would sit on the limit for the whole term and leave nothing for the next material order, which is why the two needs are kept apart.
ZIP 86429 covers a little over half of Bullhead City, AZ's land and reaches well beyond the city: 19 construction employer establishments had an address there in 2023 (ZBP). Each one that buys material ahead of its clients' payments is weighing this same draw-and-repay cycle.
What a Mohave County, AZ builder shows a lender in Bullhead City, AZ
No document goes on the request form. A partner asks for records once it reviews the request, and for a contractor the list tends to cover:
- The quote or bill of sale for each machine, with hours, serial number and the seller's name.
- Signed contracts and the draw schedule for the jobs now running.
- An aging list of what builders and owners still owe on finished phases.
- Business bank statements for recent months and the last two tax returns.
- Every current truck, equipment or credit-line payment, with its balance.
